Peter Jekovec (my maternal grandfather) was born in Zgornjem Bitnju (parish Kranj - Šmartin), and his father Peter Jekovec, b.1883 from Srednje Bele (parish Preddvor) married Marija Porenta (born in Srednjih Bitnjah).
In Srednji Beli I traced back to the oldest ancestor Martin Jekovec b.1806, but then there were no traces to his parents. Only researching the neighboring diocese of Šenčur led me to Hotemaž and Olševka.
Some time ago, I came into contact with genealogist Andraž Debeljak, who sent me entire indexed birth and marriage registers for Šenčur and Cerklje na Gorenjskem in the form of a neatly organized Excel spreadsheet. Andraž manually transcribed the entire books here.
With the help of the Excel spreadsheet, I also found ancestors before 1600, as well as entire families, as it was extremely easy to find all descendants in the birth register with a simple filter in the spreadsheet. Thus, specifically for the Jekovec ancestors, I have the most researched tree (up to 10 generations back).
Since I also update my tree on public genealogical portals, genealogist Bojan Sajovic contacted me on one of them, telling me that he thought we both had an ancestor named Peter Sajovic and that we might be actual relatives. We both went to check our trees and sources and quickly confirmed that it was indeed a common ancestor - we are indeed 8th cousins.
Since Bojan has been researching his family for quite some time, he discovered that the Sajovici originate from Hungary (along the Sajo / Šajo river). So now I have an explanation why one of my DNA tests shows as much as 8% Hungarian genes.
